Lucifer's Wings - Specimen I

I've recently decided to throw my hat into the Steampunk Myths & Legends Challenge over at CGSociety. This will be my first challenge so I'm a mix of excited and scared at the same time! There is so much great talent aboard for this one. Go see my entry thread there to keep up with my progress!

If you couldn't guess what my story is, I'm working from John Milton's epic story Paradise Lost, adapting the fallen angels as humanoids who were cast into the wilderness of Hell and built their own steampunkish technical society, their mechanical wings mimicking their former organic wings.

All that BS aside, yes this WAS an excuse to play around with the concept of gear wings.XD Probably scrapping this later once better images come along!

From the journal of Dr. Artemus Milton, PhD.:
June 1, 3087, Day 1

The first day of our dig at the ruins of the library and already we are uncovering the curious account of these winged creatures. Like heretics of old, they seemed inclined to break the link between earth and sky...and from the remains we've unearthed, it seems they succeeded.

This particular document we recovered in tattered, but fair, condition shows the first endeavors to create a means to fly which integrates the aesthetics of the human form with the clothing and musculature of the wearer.

Curious, as these wings on their own do not seem to be able to support the wearer and are crafted delicately with seeming specific attention to integrating beauty with form.

More tomorrow as the tunnelers breach the inner sanctums of the library.
